Vehicle Classes

Does the toll price vary depending on the type of vehicle I am driving?

Yes. On toll roads where class-based tolling applies, the type of vehicle you drive will determine the toll you pay. All Sydney toll roads use class-based tolling except the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel, which has a fixed toll.

When you set up a tag or pass account, you will be asked to nominate your vehicle type (class) so the correct toll can be applied.

What is my vehicle class in NSW?

Your vehicle class, along with the distance you travel, determines the tolls you pay. Vehicle class is based on the height and length of your vehicle.

Classes on Sydney Toll roads (except Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel)

  • Car and motorcycle (Class 2)
Vehicles that are 2.8 metres or less in height and 12.5 metres or less in length
  • Heavy vehicle (Class 4)
Vehicles that are greater than 12.5m in length or greater than 2.8m in height

Important:

Vehicle length and height includes (without any limitation) any towed vehicles such as trailers, caravans, or boats.

Items placed on the roof of your vehicle, or vehicles with elevated roofs may cause your vehicle to be charged as Class 4

What if I'm towing a trailer or caravan?

As the toll you pay depends on your vehicle’s class and the distance travelled, towing a trailer or caravan can change your vehicle's class which may increase the cost of your toll trips.

If your trailer or caravan has its own licence plate number, make sure you add this to your E-Toll account. This helps avoid receiving a toll notice, which includes additional fees.

Interstate vehicle classes

Toll charges and vehicle classes can vary between states, as they are set by the individual toll road operators and state governments.

Why is my vehicle classed as a heavy/light commercial vehicle, if it isn’t used for commercial purposes?

In other states, the vehicle class is based on factors such as:

  • the vehicle's make and construction design
  • Its weight or gross vehicle mass,
  • Its seating capacity

On your statement, this classification may appear as LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) or HCV (Heavy Commercial Vehicle) and is not only for vehicles used for a commercial purpose.
